Science camp
The Division of Biological Science, School of Natural Sciences, Bangalore University, organised a DST-INSPIRE science camp recently. Dileep Deobagkar, former Vice-Chancellor, Goa University, said the IT/BT industry had experienced a boom as it was marketed well. He also said the financial resources in the country are not being utilised properly for the development of science.
H.A. Ranganath, former Director, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), delivered the presidential remarks where he spoke about the role of a teacher in moulding students. He said the employment of teachers in universities should be carefully scrutinised, so that students are exposed to the best in the field.
INSPIRON
The intercollegiate techno-management fest INSPIRON 13.0 at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was inaugurated by Lakshmi Prasad K.K., Vice-President, SAP, and Dinesh K. Anvekar, Director, Entrepreneurship, Development, CMRIT, Bangalore, both alumni of UVCE. The fest was sponsored by SAP, Vista Mind, AutoDesk and TEQIP-II.
Mr. Prasad, in his inaugural address, highlighted the importance of solving the real-time problems and emphasised on the need for industrial training and industry-oriented syllabus to make India globally competitive.
Mr. Anvekar said engineers are the backbone of the nation. It is very critical for them to solve problems in an efficient way. The growth and development of society rests on the creativity of the engineering community. The quest for knowledge and experimental accuracy leading to perfection are the pillars of the engineering education.
Venugopal K.R., Principal, UVCE, stressed on the need for value-based education. He said education, knowledge, and intelligence coupled with ethics and culture would enable the country to regain its past glory.
The two-day fest witnessed a gamut of technical and managerial programmes. A general quiz, hunting for intellectuals, ‘techno pirate,’ a technical treasure hunt, AD-venture, a high beam event on advertisements, ‘gadget guru’ and ‘steal jobs’ and even a mock placement bridging the gap between the corporate world and academia were among the events held.
Over 2,000 students participated and students from UVCE, RVCE, MSRIT, RJIT, Ambedkar College and Vivekananda Degree College took home prizes.
Founder’s Day
CMR Group of Institutions, on their Founder’s Day, felicitated meritorious students and sportspersons. The Jnanadhara Trust, which manages the CMR group, disbursed the CMR Memorial Merit Scholarships worth Rs. 20 lakh to 164 students. The students received awards for excelling in academics, sports and leadership.
Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, K.R. Puram MLA Byrathi Basavaraj, and Principal Secretary, Primary and Secondary Education, Rajkumar Khatri, were the chief guests. K.C. Raju Reddy and K.C. Erappa Reddy, sons of the late founder of CMR, Chikka Muniyappa Reddy, were the guests of honour. The chairman of CMR, K.C. Ramamurthy, and the President, K.C Sabitha Ramamurthy, were also present.
Teacher Service Awards were also distributed. As many as 70 teachers from CMR institutions received these awards.
The Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Dinesh Gundu Rao, former Union Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief, and others were present.
The CMR Puraskara Award was given to K.R.I. Jagadish, the therapist who pioneered the ‘Jag Therapy’.
Mourning
Students from 73 countries, including the Philippines, from Garden City College, mourned for the people who lost their lives due to the typhoon Haiyan. Vice-Principal Kalyan Sundaram addressed the gathering to express grief for the devastated nationals of the Philippines.
Nudi Habba
The management, faculty and students of SRN Adarsh College, managed by Adarsh Vidya Sangh, celebrated Nudi Habba.
The Adarsh Rajyotsava awardees Ajay Kumar Singh, former IPS officer; T.N. Seetharam, well-known director; and Mahendra Manot, artist and social worker, were felicitated on the occasion.
In his address, the chief guest, Mayor of Bangalore B.S. Satyanarayana, said that the trilingual policy being followed is the right way to encourage all the languages.
ByteStruck’13
The Computer Science and Engineering department of HKBKCE, Bangalore, organised ByteStruck’13, a FOSS-based inter-school competition for schools in the Bangalore region.
ByteStruck is a competition organised for and by students to promote and encourage the use of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) among the academic community.
The event, now running in its fifth year, was started at the P.A. College of Engineering (PACE) in Mangalore.
The one-day event consists of two sessions – the first is a competition to test the skills of the invited school students at the software, and the second is a workshop conducted by the students of the host college for the high-school student attendees.
A total of 17 teams from various schools registered for the event. The teams were divided into two batches, with one working on the software in Lab-1 and the other in the seminar hall engaged in tasks related to the afternoon workshop session. Every team was required to register online on the Hwawei Club before the start of the event.
After this, the teams were given four themes from which they had to choose any one and create a game, animation or scene based on the theme.
After the session, every team had to present their work before the judges.
The first prize was won by the team from St. Charles High School, and the second and third prizes were won by teams from Army Public School.
Kannada Rajyotsava
M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava with fervour.
Women and Child Development Minister Umashree, who participated in the celebrations, stressed on the need to take Kannada language to a global level, similar to the presence that the other south Indian languages such as Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam have.
Hailing the institute for celebrating Rajyotsava, she also said effort was needed to take Kannada films to the world platform and pointed to Rajnikanth-starrer films that have a wide audience globally.
Awards
Two students of Integrated M.Sc. Biological Sciences, Bangalore University — Jyothi S.C. and Maithiri M. — showcased their research talent at the DHIH Science Slam held in Ahmedabad recently.
They were awarded fellowships to visit and associate with scientists in Germany for three months.
All expenses for the travel, stay, etc., will be borne by DFG Germany, a release from Bangalore University said.
