Australia is once again becoming a destination of choice for Indian students seeking an overseas education. The number of applicants for student visa between July and September 2013 was more than double that of the corresponding period in 2012.
According to Australia’s High Commission to India Patrick Suckling, the latest immigration figures shows 4,148 Indians made offshore applications for student visas between July and September 2013 and more than 90 per cent were successful. The success rate was up from 74 per cent in 2012.
India constitutes the second largest overseas contingent in Australia after China. While a quarter of the overseas intake in Australian higher education institutions in 2013-14 came from China, India was a distant second at 11 per cent. But, India registered a sharper increase over the previous year’s intake at 7.3 per cent as against China’s 4.9 per cent.
