The heavy downpour last week did not leave Usha Street in Seethapathy Nagar, Velachery, inundated. A street without stagnant water, after a heavy spell of rain, was an incredible sight for residents. The pleasant change had been brought about by recently laid storm water drains that come with perlocation pits.
“We live in this street for nearly five years. Every time it rains, water stagnates on the street for a few days. Moreover, the soil here is clayey which doesn’t absorb water easily. In fact, it was worse when we did not have a proper road. It is almost six months since the road was laid and now our street has perlocation pits to recharge groundwater level,” says Uma Ramaswamy.
A similar facility is expected to be laid in the other streets of Seethapathy Nagar as well.
Because of the recent shower, work could have been suspended, say the residents.
Another resident Sandhya says, “I think the water that percolates into the drain will remain clean as stones have been laid beneath the drain. It is moreover closed.
The work has been carried out in a thoughtful manner, say the residents. The reason they cite is each stormwater drain is given a number which is written on the walls.
Moreover, the street has got new pavements where the design of tiles is such that it allows water percolation, add the residents.
Also, the street will get a name board.
