Inside an opulent beach-side bungalow, a song sequence is being picturised for writer-director Leo Thaddeus' ‘Payyans’.
Jayasurya is the hero, while Lal and Rohini play his parents. Anjali, who shot to fame in the recent Tamil hit ‘Angaditheru,' is the heroine.
Family drama
“It is a family drama that tells the story from the point of view of a youngster called Josy (Jayasurya). A student of engineering, Josy lives in Fort Kochi with his mother, Padma (Rohini), who works in a shipping company. His lackadaisical attitude affects his studies and his life and often lands him in trouble. Eventually, he decides to mend his ways,” says the director, who has also written the script.
Cinematographer S.G. Raman gets set for the next shot. The camera is mounted on a trolley inside one of the rooms and Jayasurya is sitting in a corner.
“My character is a happy-go-lucky chap with nary a care in the world. His father, John Varghese (Lal) is a marine engineer. But, for several years, the family has no clue about John's whereabouts. Josy only knows his father through the stories that his mother tells him,” explains Jayasurya.
Smooth take
Meanwhile Leo calls for action and the take is smoothly filmed. After completing the shot, the unit watches the visuals on a monitor. Leo's ‘Pachamarathanalil,' with Sreenivasan and Padmapriya, was also a family drama. “Although this film is also a family drama, ‘Payyans' is about the parent-children relationship,” says Leo.
Anjali enacts Seema, a sound engineer in a radio station. Anjali stands by her beau, Josy, during several crucial moments in his life. Lalu Alex, Shankar, Janardhanan, Suraj Venjarammoodu and ‘Guinness' Pakru play important characters in the film.
‘Payyans' is being produced under the banner of Kammu Vadakkan Films by Noushad and will reach theatres in December.
