Though the ruling Akali Dal-BJP combine managed to win six seats in Punjab, one more than its 2009 tally, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stole the show in the Lok Sabha election, taking almost 25 per cent of the votes and winning four of the 13 seats.
The party put up a dismal show elsewhere in the country, but sprang a surprise in Punjab, where its relatively less-known candidates trounced established leaders of the Congress and the Akali Dal.
The other significant result in the State was in Amritsar, where the “Modi wave” could not help the BJP’s Arun Jaitley win against former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of the Congress.
Minister for Local Bodies Anil Joshi submitted his resignation owning moral responsibility for his party colleague’s defeat.
Capt. Singh won by more than one lakh votes .
Capt. Singh’s wife and Union Minister Preneet Kaur lost to Dharamvir Gandhi of the AAP by more than 20,000 votes.
