Michelin Tyres, which is setting up a plant in Thiruvallur district, 40 km from Chennai, will shortly hire under-200 people.
Prasahant Prabhu, President, Africa, Middle East and India for Michelin said that the company would continue to hold 40 hectares that it holds near Ranjangaon in Pune, Maharashtra, which it has had ever since it withdrew from a proposed joint venture in India.
“We have already started hiring and have taken 60 people for our Chennai plant,” Mr. Prabhu told a group of visiting journalists from India.
Training at overseas
He said that the recruited people would soon be sent for training at the overseas production facilities of the French multinational. “They will be part of the start-up team.”
Michelin, which announced its Rs. 4,000 crore investment plan for setting up a truck tyre unit in India, also said that it would employ 1,500 people.
“We intend to start with significant local talent and by 2011-12 will start hiring the wage labour,” Mr. Prabhu said.
The investment would happen over a seven-year period with the capacity being determined by the prevailing exchange rates.
