The merger of State Bank of India with its associate banks and Bhartiya Mahila Bank is likely to be completed by March 2017, SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya said.

One-day strike

Employees of public sector banks have gone on a one-day strike to protest against the proposed merger and services of about 80,000 bank branches across the country were hit as a result of the strike.

“There have been strikes but we have to educate them and take them on board,” Ms. Bhattacharya said. For the merger to get over, which would make SBI one of Asia’s largest banks, the “timeline is at the end of the financial year.”
