“Music is the only art form in which you can afford to forget yourself and get sublimed,” observed Usha Ananthasubramaniam, General Manager, South Zone, Bank of Baroda on Saturday.

“In any other art form, you should be aware of yourself whereas in music you could forget yourself and get transported to a different level,” she added.

Inaugurating the annual music festival of Nada Sudha at Sachidhananda Ashram Hall, Velachery, she said music was a very effective medium and helped one focus on “positive mental discipline.” At the same time, it helped keep away “negative mental habits”.

“Music is so full of imagination, there is more scope for creativity.” In the Indian tradition of music, the ragas reached the heart. Besides, “it is a very powerful tool that a number of people from Saint Thyagaraja to Kabir used this to achieve mukthi,” she said.

N. Balasubramaniam, president of the Sabha, welcomed the gathering.

V. Balasubramaniam, secretary, said it had been proposed to conduct a three-day Thyagaraja Aaradhana during February next and also a Tamilisai festival during the middle of the year.
