Guilty by association

Yakub Memon is not innocent. But the death penalty he has received is not only excessive but reeks of vendetta and prejudice. Hanging him won’t bring closure, but sparing him won’t amount to betrayal either.

Sparing him won’t amount to betrayal. It will, in fact, give us a chance to prove that our democracy is mature and progressive, and we choose to fight terrorism through restorative means. That opportunity, however, is lost for now.
