Positive declaration powers Alwarpet’s victory push

X. Thalaivan Sargunam completed his maiden double-century in the TNCA first-division cricket league here on Tuesday and helped Globe Trotters recover to a comfortable position in its third-round match against IOB.

The 26-year-old opener, who resumed on 118, extended his stay to a minute short of 10 hours and made 201 n.o. (452b, 16x4, 3x6).

Thalaivan and R.D. Ashwin Kumar (81) added 151 for the ninth wicket, allowing Trotters to declare on 396 for nine.

The other double-century of the day came from R. Nilesh Subramanian, who needed to add just seven runs to his overnight score against TI Cycles.

Nilesh’s 210 (277b, 26x4, 2x6) and N. Einstein’s 84 powered Jolly Rovers to 543.

Raghavendran excels

For TI Cycles, N. Raghavendran, the 42-year-old off-spinner with a prolific first-division record, took five wickets before Athiraj Shandilya (77 batting) led the reply.

In other matches, P. Shijith Chandran, K. Martin Sanjeev, and Sree Kumar Nair made hundreds.

Shijith’s 139 n.o. (196b, 15x4, 1x6) and aggressive declaration enabled Alwarpet progress towards an outright win against Indian Bank.

Martin Sanjeev’s 121 (221b, 8x4, 4x6) complemented V. Subramania Siva’s 179, as Young Stars made 435 against Vijay. Sree Kumar Nair’s unbeaten 103 (159b, 9x4, 1x6) helped Grand Slam declare its innings on 440 for seven against Aruna.

Indrajith makes 147

The 18-year-old B. Indrajith advanced from 109 to 147 before UFCC was dismissed for 371.

Seamer M. Mohammed and leg-spinner M. Ashwin split eight wickets for Pistons.

Rain brought an early end to the second day’s play at all venues except Murugappa.
