It was a routine day at office for most of the seeded players even as quite a few of them found the city's hot and humid weather conditions difficult to handle on the opening day of the Asian closed junior (under-18) tennis championships here on Monday.
China's Gao Xin and Ayaka Okuno of Japan, the boys' and girls' No.1 seeds respectively, drubbed their opponents to book a place in the second round. As many four players retired midway unable to cope with the conditions.
Jurence Zosimo Mendoza of Philippines, Thailand's Chanudom Wiryajanyong and Siriporn Phakamad and Rajat Maheshwari of India were victims of intense heat.
While three foreigners conceded complaining of stomach cramps, Rajat created a flutter when he fainted inside the toilet after losing the first set to Manish Kumar.
Ronit Bisht withdrew from the tournament citing medical reasons.
Mohit Mayur's case was unusual. After having received a wild card, it turned out later that he had been ‘suspended for a month' (April-May) by the International Tennis Federation for entering his name in two tournaments in Europe and not giving reasons for withdrawing from them. Representing Great Britain, Arjun Dutta was allowed to play as he is a Person of Indian Origin (his mother hails from India).
Earlier, M.A. Alagappan, President, TNTA, inaugurated the championships.
