Rishika battles into semifinals

Second seed Rishika Sunkara fought past Jenny Claffey of Ireland 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

After losing the first set and trailing 0-2 in the second, the 22-year-old won 12 of the next 14 games.

In the semifinals, Rishika plays Aussie No.8 seed Sara Tomic.

Rishika, however, lost her doubles semifinal, as she and Sharon Sanchana Paul, the third seeds, missed a matchpoint at 9-8 in the match tie-break to lose to Claffey and Ines Murta of Portugal.

Top seeds Olga Parres Azcoitia of Spain and Prarthana Thombare reeled off four points from 6-7 in their match tie-break against Sai Samhitha and Eetee Maheta to make the final.

In the $15,000 ITF Futures tournament in Charlottesville, USA, fourth seed Sanam Singh was beaten 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals by eighth seed Ernesto Escobedo.

Karman Kaur Thandi and Sumit Nagal, meanwhile, made the girls’ and boys’ finals in the ITF grade-1 junior tournament in Offenbach, Germany.

ITF grade-1 juniors, Offenbach: Semifinals: Boys: Sumit Nagal bt Nicola Kuhn (Ger) 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2. Girls: Karman Kaur Thandi bt Destanee Aiava (Aus) 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

IFT grade-4 juniors, Jakarta: Boys’ doubles semifinals: B.R. Nikshep & Dhruv Sunish bt Muhammad Iqbal Anshori & Fabian Ariesto Soemarno 6-2, 6-0.
