Sania Mirza's hopes of a trouble-free season suffered a major setback when the Indian tennis star injured her knee during the third round of the women's doubles match in the ongoing U.S. Open in New York.

Imran Mirza, father of Sania, in a communication informed The Hindu that Sania had been diagnosed with a ruptured left knee miniscus and was advised a minimum of six weeks rest by a specialist in New York.

On her return home to Hyderabad, Sania is slated to visit orthopaedic specialists.

"Based on further tests and on their report, necessity of surgical intervention will be considered," Imran said.

It may be recalled here that Sania had undergone an arthroscopy to repair the ACL on her right knee a few years ago.

"It is certainly disappointing that Sania has to miss the year-end Championships in Istanbul where she was expected to partner Elena Vesnina. They are the front-runners in the race for the top four doubles teams of the World for 2011," Imran remarked.
