Ashvarya advances to the second round

June 14, 2011 02:55 am | Updated 02:55 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Ashvarya Shrivastava outclassed Shin Jung Yoon of Korea 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

The fourth-seeded Ashvarya almost squandered the first set as she missed two setpoints in the ninth game after having taken a commanding 5-1 lead.

The defensive play of the Korean who tested her by lobbing quite a bit seemed to put Ashvarya on the backfoot, but once she captured the first set in the 12th game, the 19-year-old Indian had little trouble in changing gears and overwhelming her opponent.

In the second set, Ashvarya raced to a 4-1 lead, recovered from a mild setback when she returned a break, to record a straightforward victory.

Ankita prevails

National champion Ankita Raina was the other seeded Indian player to make the pre-quarterfinals, and the seventh seed did so at the expense of wild card Vaniya Dangwal.

Qualifier Prarthana Thombare ran into Yang Zhaoxuan of China and could eke out only two games.
