Jackpot of jackpots on Derby day

Nearly ₹4 crore stakes on offer during the February 3 weekend

The countdown to the Kingfisher Ultra Indian Derby, scheduled to be held at the Mahalaxmi race course on February 3, has begun.

Speaking to the press, Zeenia Lawyer, member of the marketing committee of RWITC, said “for first time-ever in Indian racing there will be a “Jackpot of Jackpots” on the Derby day. An amount of ₹1 crore will be added to the collection of the combined jackpot pool and the total collection for the day would cross ₹2crore mark.”

“RWITC is the only racing club in India that has evening races and this was started in 2015. The most-anticipated weekend will kick-start with an evening of night racing and musical performances on February 2 (Saturday) at 4 p.m. and will end at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the Derby will be held at 5.30 p.m. and two races will be held under the floodlights.”

“The total expected stakes of the Derby will be close to ₹2 crore with ₹1.5 crores added by the UB Group and the stakes for the weekend will be just under ₹4 crore (₹3.9 crore)” said Geoffrey Nagpal, chairman, stewards of the club.

Gurpreet Singh, divisional vice-president (marketing), United Breweries Ltd said “We are proud to be associated with the Kingfisher Ultra Indian Derby which provides us the perfect platform to provide that unique and memorable experience to our audience. The derby weekend will feature live entertainment that will include musical acts such as Forefront and DJ Chico.”

Mr. Milan Luthria, member, RWITC managing committee added that “the auction sales will be held on February 4 and 5 with a total of 171 horses entered in this year’s catalogue. Rolling of the horses will begin pre-derby from January 31, February 1 and the mornings of February 2 and 3.”
