Suryanarayana Raja passes away

K. Suryanarayana Raja, former international basketball player and a vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, passed away on Monday. He was 72.

Hailing from Rajapalayam, Suryanarayana graduated from St. Xavier’s College (Palayamkottai) and then from Madras Law College.

He represented Rajapalayam Union Basketball Club in local tournaments and Madras Nationals during his student days here.

He played for Madras University for four years. An officer with the State Bank of India, he was a key player for the Bank team for over a decade and for the State in National championships.

Though selected to the National team for the ABC championship in 1963 (India did not make the trip to Chinese Taipei) he could earn the India colours only in the Asian quadrangular in Colombo in 1965.

Suryanarayana is survived by his wife and son based in New York. The cremation will take place on Wednesday.

Jamal Mohamed meets PSG in final

Host Jamal Mohamed College and PSG CAS entered the final of the Krishnaswami Naidu Memorial Trophy State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament at Tiruchi.

The results (semifinals): Jamal Mohamed 74 (Naveen Kumar 16, Jayaveerapandi 14, Mohanraj 13, Selvaraj 10) bt VOC 33 (Paul Merson 14).

PSG CAS 68 (Thirunavukkarasu 24, Michael Ajay 20) bt PAB CET 48 (Deenadayala 18, Mohammed Razul 17).
