Almaty, Beijing, Krakow, Lviv, Oslo and Stockholm are bidding for the 2022 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee said after the Thursday midnight expiration of its application deadline.
The IOC said in a statement on Friday that interest is rising in the Winter Olympics after only three ctities were interested in the 2018 edition, which went to South Korea’s Pyeongchang ahead of Munich and Annecy of France.
The IOC spoke of “a strong mix of both traditional and developing winter sports markets.” The 2022 host city will elected at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
Munich had considered another bid, but that was stopped by a referendum on Saturday. A possible Swiss bid was also vetoed by the local population.
