Seeded No.1, Joshna Chinappa and Mahesh Mangaonkar will have the same goal, but with a slight difference as the HCL 75th National squash championships moves to the HCL Technology Hub in Noida for the main draw matches on Thursday.

With an outdoor glass court, the four-day climax promises to be a spectacle.

Joshna, with 15 titles to her credit, will be looking to match Bhuvaneshwari Kumar’s record 16 National titles. In contrast, Mahesh, who had lost to Saurav Ghosal in a lively final last year, will be looking to win his maiden national crown.

The intensity and numbers in the men’s event are absolutely intimidating as the players first went through pre-qualification in a draw of 256, followed by another spell of qualification, featuring two rounds in a draw of 32.

After so much filtering, the qualifiers run into eight of the best players in the country in the main draw of 16.

In the men’s first round, Mahesh will play Naveen Jangra. Second seed Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu will open against Ashish Patel. Ghosal had opted to skip the Nationals after winning 12 titles as he felt that the season had been pretty demanding in the international circuit.

In the women’s event, Joshna will open against Sunidhi Pandey. Lakshya Ragavendran, who had given a good fight to Joshana in the final last year, retired in the first round of qualification this time in a draw of 64.

Only the top two seeds in the women’s event will play their pre-quarterfinals at the HCL Hub, while the other six matches will be played at the Siri Fort Squash Courts.

Like every year, there will be events for professional coaches, senior men and women, and in over-35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 age-groups.

The results (qualifying event, final round):

Men: Ashish Patel bt Ajay Singh Badoria 11-4, 13-11, 7-11, 11-7; Guhan Senthilkumar bt Rishi Jain 11-9, 11-7, 11-3; Vijay Kumar bt Anshul Goyal 11-8, 11-4, 11-7; Naveen Jangra bt Siddharth Phutela 11-13, 11-4, 11-7, 4-11, 11-5; Rahul Baitha bt Suraj Chand 11-3, 11-8, 11-5; Saksham Choudhary bt Ashish Keskar 11-2, 11-7, 11-8; Suhail Kapur bt Sandeep Paswan 11-7, 11-7, 11-8; Vikas Mehra bt Aakash Sharma 11-8, 11-8, 13-11.
