Italian Olympic Committee sets medal target

July 03, 2012 08:03 pm | Updated 08:03 pm IST - ROME

Italian Olympic Committee President Giovanni Petrucci says Italy must aim for at least 25 medals at the London Games this summer.

Italy won 27 medals in Beijing four years ago, while its medal tally topped 30 at each of the previous three Olympics.

On Tuesday, Petrucci says “the smallest target has to be getting more than 25, 26 medals ... I know very well that France, Spain and Germany are very strong and that’s why I’m worried.”

290 Italian athletes have already qualified for the London Games and Petrucci is confident that more than 300 will eventually be in the Italian delegation.
