Fifteen-year-old P. Iniyan secured his third and final Grandmaster norm in the 41 Open International Barbera del Valles chess tournament, which concluded near here on Thursday.

Iniyan finished second with a score of seven points from nine rounds. However, the boy from Erode, who remained undefeated in the tournament, is yet to get the required Elo rating points to become a GM.

He defeated two GMs (Ortiz Reynaldo from Cuba and Jose Eduardo from Peru), drew with three GMs (Gusenov Gadir from Azerbaijan, Oliva Kevel from Cuba and Stella Andrea from Italy) and one IM (Asis Gargatagli Hipolito from Spain). Iniyan acquired the final GM norm in the match against Andrea.

“With support from sponsor Olirum Erodu Foundation, coach K. Visweswaran and The Indian Public school, I’ve achieved this level,” said Iniyan.
