Elite National boxing: Haryana pugilists reign

Haryana emerged the champion in the inaugural Elite National boxing championship for men, organised by Boxing India, with four gold and 40 points here. Services Sports Control Board finished runner-up with 28 points and Railway Sports Promotion Board was third, also with 28 points.

Sunil Sangwan of Haryana was adjudged ‘best boxer’, M. Thomas of Manipur ‘the best challenger boxer’ and P. L. Prasad of Karnataka ‘most promising boxer’.

The results (finals):

Light fly: P.L. Prasad (Kar) bt Salman Sheikh (RSPB) 2-1; Fly: Amandeep Singh (RSPB) bt Yogindera (Odi) 2-1; Bantam: Sunil (Har) bt Asad Asif (WB) 2-1; Light: Manjeet Kumar (SSCB) bt Manish (Har) 2-1; Light welter: Duryodhan Singh (SSCB) bt M. Thomas (Man) KO (1st round).

Welter: Rakesh (Har) bt Manjeet Kumar (Odi) 3-0; Middle: Harpal Singh (J & K) bt Sukdeep Singh (RSPB) 3-0; Light heavy: Sumit Sangwan (Har) bt Geetanand (HP) KO (3rd round); Heavy: Manpreet Singh (Meg) bt Mahendra Negi (Sik) 3-0; Super heavy: Satish Kumar (SSCB) bt Arun (Sik) 3-0.

Best boxer: Sumit Sangwan (Har); Best challenger boxer: M. Thomas (Man); Most promising boxer: P.L. Prasad (Kar).
