Divya Deshmukh of Maharashtra won the final round against Gunjal Chopdekar of Goa to win the National under-7 girls’ chess championship at Puducherry on Tuesday.
Divya finished on 9.5 points. One point behind her saw Rakshitta Ravi and Aditi Mohanty tie for the second-third places.
They finished in that order on tie-break. The top three players represent India in the World and Asian under-8 2013, championship. All the girls lost at least one game.
Praggnanandhaa of Tamil Nadu who won the boys’ title with a round to spare on Tuesday, finished with a score of 11/11 after winning the final round in style.
Players from Odisha are making huge waves at the top in age group chess. Mahitosh Dey of Odisha finished second with nine points.
Manthan Datta of Assam took third place one tie-break.
Trophies and cash prizes totalling Rs.1.50 lakhs were distributed by V. Sabapathy, Speaker, Puducherry Legislative Assembly and Bharat Singh Chauhan, Honorary Secretary, All India Chess Federation.
