Sania starts with a win

Sanam Singh and Rushmi Chakravarthi combined well to beat Vaja Uzakov and Nigina Abduraimova of Uzbekistan 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of mixed doubles in tennis in the Asian Games on Thursday.

In women's singles, Sania Mirza wasted little time in humbling Venise Chan Wing Yau of Hong Kong 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. However, she will be up against the tough customer, the sixth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China in the pre-quarterfinals on Friday.

The 91st ranked Chinese had beaten Sania in three sets in the quarterfinals of a Tour event at a different venue here in Guangzhou in September.

The other Indian girl, Poojashree Venkatesh lost 2-6, 2-6 to Kai Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei in the first round.

In squash, Joshana Chinappa defeated Jemca Aribado of Philippines 11-6, 11-7, 11-4 in 19 minutes in the women's first round. Compatriot Deepika Pallikal beat Jinyue Gu of China 11-4, 12-10, 11-1 in 23 minutes.

In swimming, India finished sixth in the men's 4 x 100 metres medley relay final, as M. B. Balakrishnan, Sandeep Sejwal, Rehan Poncha and Aaron D'Souza, clocked 3 minutes 52.97 seconds. Japan won the gold at 3:34.10 ahead of Korea and Kazakhstan. The Indian team had qualified with a better timing of 3:49.38 in the heats in the morning, thanks to the presence of Virdhawal Khade, in place of Balakrishnan.

In men's 200-metre breaststroke, Sandeep Sejwal was placed tenth at 2:19.78. M. B. Balakrishnan was 17th with a time of 27.63 seconds in the men's 50-metre backstroke heats.

In table tennis, Sharath Kamal lost to Sang Eun Oh of Korea in the pre-quarterfinals at 9-11, 4-11, 7-11, 12-10, 6-11. Amalraj Arputharaj also lost the pre-quarterfinals, 10-12, 5-11, 1-11 to Chih Yuan Chuang of Chinese Taipei in the men's pre-quarterfinals.

Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha lost 9-11, 6-11, 4-11 to Jungwoo Lee and Sang Eun Oh of Korea in the pre-quarterfinals of the men's doubles.

In women's singles second round, K. Shamini lost 7-11, 5-11, 11-, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11 to Sayaka Hirano of Japan.

In women's volleyball preliminary round, DPR Korea defeated India 25-23, 25-13, 25-20.

In handball, China beat India 43-9 in a women's preliminary round, and Japan beat India 54-26 in the men's group A match.

In women's basketball preliminary round, China beat India 107-39 after leading 56-21 at halftime. Guan Xin (16), Gao Song (14), Zhang Wei (13) Chen

Nan (12) and Ding Yuan (10) were the main scorers for China. Geethu Anna Jose (12), D. Anitha (11) and Raspreet Sidhu (11) scored double figures for India.

In golf, Rashid Khan found himself in the third spot, after two rounds, with a five-under 139.

He had a four-under 68 in the second round. Miguel Luis Tablena (136) of Philippines and Meen Whee Kim (138) of Korea led the table.
