Joshna, Dipika in semifinals

Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal progressed to the semifinals of the squash Chennai Open women's doubles championship at the Indian Squash Academy here on Tuesday with a straight-games win over Malaysians Low Wee Wern and Delia Arnold.

The Indian pair needed 27 minutes to get past its fancied opponents 11-6, 11-4 and will take on England's Jenny Duncalf and Australia's Rachael Grinham in the semifinal.

Later, Pallikal paired up with Saurav Ghosal to beat compatriots Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Sandhu 11-7, 11-9 in the second round of the mixed doubles, earning India another semifinal berth.

Home interest was also sustained in the men's doubles when Ghosal and Sandhu got past Gaurav Nandrajog and Sandeep Jangra 11-2, 11-10 in the second round.

Meanwhile, an upset materialised in the mixed doubles whenAlan Clyne and Frania Gillen of Scotland defeated their higher-ranked opponents Jonathan Kemp and Jaclyn Hawkes 11-10, 11-7. The Scots will next meet Pallikal and Ghosal in the semifinal on Wednesday.

In other action, England's Jonathan Kemp and South Africa's Stephen Coppinger played a 55-minute marathon against Scotsmen Stuart Crawford and Jamie Macaulay before triumphing in three games in a second round match of men's doubles.
