The Society of India Law Firms (SILF) will hold a conference on sports law in the Capital on July 24 and 25.

The conference to be inaugurated by the Union Minister of Human Resource and Development, Mr. Kapil Sibal, will discuss various issues on the subject, particularly in the light of the coming Commonwealth Games.

The recent IPL controversy, broadcasting rights, advertising, marketing of goods, legalities involved in staging major sports events like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Olympics, will be some of the topics of discussion in the two-day conference.

Personalities from sports and legal fields are expected to take part in the panel discussions on other topics like gender discrimination in sports, intellectual property rights, importance of transparency in corporate structure of professional sports leagues, issues related to infrastructure development and maintenance of stadiums, training facilities etc.

The president of SILF, Mr. Lalit Bhasin, said that laws related to sports were still not clear and transparent in India, and the forum would attempt to reach clarity on the subject.

“The need of the hour is to set strong and lucid policies to combat all legal issues related to sports. One needs to be familiar with the issues before tackling them'', he said.
