Indian Bank advances

July 11, 2012 04:29 pm | Updated 04:30 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Indian Bank cruised to a 5-3 victory over Dominic Memorial in the pre-quarterfinal of the IOB-Syed Ahmed Memorial hockey tournament on Tuesday.

Indian Bank, initiating threatening raids, had a distinct edge over its opponent in the first-half. However, it was Dominic that took the lead after Koushikan, cutting in from the left, slammed home in the eighth minute.

Although Dominic’s backline resisted stoutly, the bank side brought up the equaliser in the 16th minute. Heartlin James swivelled to evade the defence and struck the ball in with tremendous force. Indian Bank’s sustained pressure fetched it the lead four minutes before the interval.

Deepak converted the penalty corner with ease.

The second session saw Indian Bank stamp its authority on the match. Skipper Phillip Martin scored the first of his two goals with a fine back-hander in the 37th minute.

Three minutes later, Mariya Stalin made it 4-1 for Indian Bank with a well-executed nudge.

Dominic’s tiring defence was hardly any match for Indian Bank’s players, who backed up an attacking intent with frenetic pace.

Dominic’s late surge helped reduce the margin of defeat. While Koushikan scored off a penalty corner in the 65th, Albert made good use of a counter-attack three minutes before the hooter.

Koushikan was adjudged man-of-the- match.

Earlier, in another pre-quarterfinal contest, Ashwin’s brace helped ICF defeat Tamil Nadu Police 2-0. He was declared man-of-the-match.

The results (pre-quarterfinals) : Indian Bank 5 (Phillip Martin 2, Heartlin James, Mariya Stalin, Deepak) bt Dominic Memorial 3 (Koushikan 2, Albert); ICF 2 (Ashwin) bt Tamil Nadu Police 0.
