HI lifts ban on Gurbaj

October 25, 2015 02:32 am | Updated 02:32 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Hockey India on Saturday lifted the nine-month ban on midfielder Gurbaj Singh with immediate effect, paving the way for his return to the National side.

With this decision, the 27-year-old will be free to compete in all domestic competitions and be eligible for selection to the Indian team in the upcoming tournaments.

“We have decided to reduce the ban to the period already undergone with immediate effect after reviewing the case as per the court orders. The court findings include that Gurbaj’s conduct during the 2012 Olympics cannot be considered for a decision here and that imposing a ban came under penalties for indiscipline during tournaments, not camps, under the FIH guidelines. However, we will suggest including off-field discipline as well in the Code of Conduct so that such a situation doesn’t arise in future,” committee chairman Harbinder Singh said.

He added that Gurbaj's selection would depend on his own performances. However, while the decision, on paper, means the experienced player is free for consideration for National duty, it may not be as easy to make a comeback.

Harbinder insisted that the case and its fallout would have no effect on further selection meetings but also indicated that the requirements of the team necessitated players who could multi-task.

“Only 15 players, barring the goalkeeper, can go to the Olympics. As such, players who can switch positions would be preferred in case of injuries. That said, we expect him to be a role model for younger players and give his best for the team whenever he is selected,” Harbinder said.

Interestingly, Gurbaj’s reluctance to play anywhere other than right-half position was among the charges of indiscipline.

Gurbaj, on his part, said he was only looking forward. “I am always ready for the team and do my best. Team’s performance is the most important thing for me. Wherever I can contribute to the team’s improvement and satisfy the coach, I would be happy to play,” Gurbaj told The Hindu from Jalandhar.

“It is now up to the selectors. I will also speak to the coach to find out his plans about my future,” he added.
