Jamshedpur FC (JFC) made a statement of intent by signing Australia’s World Cup star Tim Cahill for the upcoming edition of the Indian Super League. The team management has also roped in former Atletico Madrid manager Cesar Ferrando as the new head coach. JFC is the team to watch this season.

State of play

Though the team finished fifth last season on its debut, former coach Steve Coppell’s defensive approach made the it painful to watch. JFC conceded 18 goals, which was the second lowest in the tournament last season. To address this issue, the team management has brought in attack-minded Ferrando, who has announced his preference for the short-passing game. He is expected to bring in welcome change to the team’s playing system.

Star player

Looking to spruce up the attack, the team has secured the services of the Cahill, top-goalscorer for Australia. The striker, who is definitely one of the biggest signings of the season, has bolstered the aspirations of the Red Miners. Having spent a larger part of his career playing with big clubs in Europe, Cahill has stated that he will try his best to bring joy to the fans by playing some good football.

Achilles heel

The team’s inability to find the back of the goal regularly cost it a playoff spot last time. It scored only 16 goals, which was again the second lowest by any side in the tournament. The midfielders were unable to connect with the strikers as they were focussed mainly in shielding the defence. There was no leader in the middle of the pitch as the team often struggled to weave a string of passes.

Foreign recruits: Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo (Tiri) (defender), Mario Arques Blasco (midfielder), Pablo Morgado (midfielder), Tim Cahill (forward), Carlos Calvo Sobrado (midfielder), Sergio Cidoncha (forward), Emerson Gomes De Moura (Memo) (midfielder).
