Guimaraes to coach Mumbai City

Alexandre Guimaraes

Brazil-born former Costa Rican midfielder Alexandre Guimaraes will coach Mumbai City FC in next season’s Indian Super League. He has had successful stints with Costa Rica’s national team that qualified for FIFA World Cups in 2002 and 2006. The 56-year-old has been manager of the Panama national team, several clubs in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, UAE and China.

“I have been coaching in Asia for a few years and the Indian growth story is something that has caught my eye for quite a while.

“I am very excited about this new challenge and I hope, that together with the entire Mumbai City FC team, we would deliver a successful season to the people of Mumbai,’’ said Guimaraes, through a club press release. A change was on the cards after the inability of Frenchman Nicolas Anelka (last year’s marquee player cum manager) to bring good results for the club, which had also parted ways with its Spanish assistant coach Oscar Bruzon midway through last year’s league.
