Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a fifth-minute Phil Foden goal giving it a nervy 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad stadium on Saturday.

The victory, coming three days after Spurs eliminated City from the Champions League, puts the pressure back on title rival Liverpool, which is at Cardiff City on Sunday and trails by a point with each side having played 34 games.

But City’s win came at a price with key midfielder Kevin De Bruyne forced off with what looked like another knee injury in the 38th minute.

It remains to be seen how serious that injury is but it will surely put him in doubt for Wednesday’s crucial Manchester derby at Old Trafford — the last game City faces against a top-six opponent.

Bernardo Silva created the goal, coasting past two Tottenham defenders before floating a delightful cross to Sergio Aguero, who headed back across the face of the goal to Foden to nod in from close range.

It was the first goal in the Premier League for the 18-year-old midfielder, making his second start in the competition.

“We knew what they were about because we have played them twice (recently) already,” said Foden.

“It’s hard and we looked a bit leggy but we got the job done.”

Son Heung-min twice threatened the City goal but both times City keeper Ederson was out quickly to nullify the danger.

Spurs felt it should have had a penalty in the 59th minute when the ball appeared to hit Kyle Walker’s arm inside the box but referee Michael Oliver waved away the appeal.

Bruno Alves grabbed a point for Parma to pile the pressure on AC Milan’s Champions League ambitions with a 1-1 draw in Emilia-Romagna in the Serie A on Saturday.

Samu Castillejo nodded Milan ahead after 69 minutes but Alves pulled the sides level with a curling free-kick three minutes from time.

AC Milan remains fourth on 56 points.

The results: Premier League: Manchester City 1 (Foden 5) bt Tottenham Hotspur 0.

La Liga: Celta Vigo 2 (Aspas 34, Boufal 69) bt Girona 1 (Portu 48).

Serie A: Parma 1 (Bruno Alves 87) drew with AC Milan 1 (Castillejo 69).

Friday: La Liga: Alaves 2 (Guidetti 4, Jony 24) drew with Valladolid 2 (Plano 38, Unal 76-pen).
