Sunderland completed the signing of Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan from Rennes on Tuesday for a club record fee of 13 million pounds (20 million dollars).
The striker, who was one of the stars of the World Cup, flew into the north-east on Monday, and completed personal terms around an hour before the transfer window closed on Tuesday. He has agreed a four-year deal.
“It’s been a long day, but finally I’m happy to be here and my family and friends are also happy for me,” Gyan told the club website.
“My family is in England already and I am happy this is the right place for me.
“The Sunderland coach has faith in me because he has been following me for two years now.
Gyan effectively replaces Kenwyne Jones, who joined Stoke for 8 million pounds earlier in the month, in the Sunderland squad.
His signing was given added urgency on Sunday when forward Fraizer Campbell damaged knee ligaments in the 1-0 win over Manchester City.
