Romario to play 2 matches in Rio’s 2nd division

Romario has announced he will fulfil his father’s dream by playing two matches with Rio de Janeiro-based football club America.

The 43-year-old striker, who retired officially last year after a 23-year career, told local media he wants to honour his father, who cheers for America and has always wanted to see Romario wear the club’s jersey.

Romario oversees the football operations of America, which is in the second division or Rio de Janeiro’s regional championship. He has already been practicing with the team.

He hasn’t played an official match since November 2007 with Vasco da Gama. His last goal was in June that year.

Romario led Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title and was voted the world’s best player that year.
