A large majority of Germans are convinced that Germany will lift the World Cup trophy on Sunday to culminate the national football team’s super matches in South Africa, according to opinion polls published on Monday.

Although the semifinal against Euro 2008 champions Spain is yet to be played on Wednesday, online polls of Kicker sports magazine and the Bild daily show huge confidence in Joachim Loew’s team.

The simple question of who will win the title was asked in both polls.

Almost 18,000 voted in the Bild poll, with 83 per cent naming Germany, 9 per cent the Netherlands, 6 per cent Spain and just 2 per cent Uruguay.

Kicker did not say how many people were taking part in their poll, but Germany held a big lead there as well with 74.45 per cent, ahead of the Dutch (11.09), Spain (10.70) and Uruguay (3.76).
