Ghana v Germany - As it happened

Both Ghana and Germany qualify from Group D despite a 1-0 defeat for Ghana. The Serbia defeat in the other group game against Australia means that both teams bow out.

Right, that is it from me. Be sure to join in later today (I say today because it now 2 am) for our continued coverage of the World Cup. Good night!

Oh, the Isner-Mahut game was finally suspended at 59-59. The chair umpire allegedly made the decision after his family complained that they never see him around anymore. Well no, just joking of course..It was actually suspended due to bad light

England v Germany on June 27 - How about this for a high voltage pre-quarterfinal clash?USA face Ghana on June 26. I call shotgun on the Germany game! Move over, Swaroop.

This has been without doubt the best game I have covered so far. Both teams not intent on playing it safe, but rather to close out any doubts about qualification with an outright victory. Kudos to both Ghana and Germany for their style of play.

What a match! Chances galore, almost end to end stuff. Ghana doing Africa proud with their qualification. Germany on top of the standings after this victory, finishing the league stages with two wins from three games.

Game over. Germany win 1-0! Ghana go through too, Serbia and Australia are out after Serbia loses 1-2 to the Aussies.

Can Serbia score another goal and draw 2-2 against Australia? That would mean Serbia and Germany go through, while Ghana make the exit.

What be this? Serbia pull one back against Australia.

2 minutes to go.. Desperate faces in the Ghana camp as they search for a goal.

Wimbledon news for you. 59-58 in the final set of the Isner-Mahut match. Apparently the two players are auditioning for the lead role in the next Rocky movie with a show of mental and physical fortitude.

10 minutes to go in this game. Ghana obviously don't care for the Serbia result, they are looking for goals here...

Even with two goals, Australia do not have enough to progress if it remains 1-0 here.

I wish I had paid more attention in math class back in the day, these group standing calculations are really testing me..

Well I think Australia just heard my plea for more goals, they have just scored a second against Serbia!

The Australian goal is a massive boost for Ghana, who can now afford to keep this one goal deficit against Germany and still progress to the next round (if the scores remain the same in the Serbia game). For Australia, they need a huge 4 goal win to stay in the fray.

Huge news just in, Australia score against Serbia. This puts a real twist on things.

66th minute: Ayew almost drew Ghana level. Elegant back pass finds an advancing Ayew who lashes at goal, but Lahm with the timely block. Lahm just stopped a certain goal there with his deflection.

As things stand now, Germany could well top the table.

62nd minute: Germany score!!Ozil you beauty!!! What a belter from outside the box with his left!! One touch, then bounces perfectly for Ozil who connects perfectly to leave the keeper stranded.

Still goalless in the Serbia-Australia game.

Curious about my midnight snack? Almost finished it in time tonight. Decided to keep the food next to me from tomorrow. Saves the time wasted in walking to the canteen. What was I thinking!

51st minute: Ayew with a golden chance for Ghana. Left unmarked in the box, has a go with his left but saved by the keeper. Didn't get any power or control behind that one.

50th minute: Germany corner is handled nervously by Kingson and the Ghana defence. But the crowd of defenders makes it impossible to get a shot away.

If the second half is as entertaining as the first, I'll excuse the TV channels for not broadcasting the Isner-Mahut game in place of the football...

And we're back..

Join us in a bit for second half action as I have another attempt at finishing a midnight snack. Futile attempt again you say? Watch this space!

Sorry once again about the delayed start, but like I said, the technical snag was for a good cause. Effective June 24, you are now officially part of history with the new Hindu site.

A very entertaining first half, lots of chances for both teams. I dont see this game continuing without a goal for too long, goals are in the offing given the attacking style of the game so far.

Half-time, no goals so far. No goals in the Serbia-Australia game either.

Back to the group permutations and combinations, a draw in this game will see Ghana go through, and Germany will then hope for an Australian victory over Serbia to advance on goal difference.

42nd minute: Mertesacker jumps high in an attempt to get something on a free kick. Barely touches the ball with his head, but Ghana custodian Kingson makes the save.

Let me break down the possiblities in this group for you. The winner of this match is sure of a place of in the last 16. A Serbia victory against Australia in the other game will see them through too. A victory for Australia will complicate matters a bit.

Important news from the Serbia-Australia game. The score is tied at 0-0.

37th minute: German corner lands for Khedira, but his header doesn't trouble the keeper.

By the way, have you been following this absolutely mental game in Wimbledon? Isner v Mahut? The final set is tied on 50-50. I said 50 games apiece!! The match still going on...

30th minute: Germany's Cacau has a tough attempt on goal. The ball was too high for him to control and bring down.

Interesting fact - We have brothers playing for opposing teams in this game. That's right, opposing teams. The Baoteng brothers. Fancy that!

26th minute: Ozil has a shot for Germany but is blocked out. Great chance for Germany to score the opening goal.

Enough with the apologies and technical details, can we please get to the game? I hear you...

In keeping with changing times, this live update will follow a style more comfortable to the reader. You no longer need to scroll down completely to see the latest update, the latest update will be on the top of the page..

The reason for the late start is that the Hindu site has gone through a complete revamp. We are no longer a 'Beta' site, as you can now access the site on https://www.thehindu.com/... A bit of time was lost in the transition, thus the delay in starting live updates for this match..

We are 16 minutes into the game and the score stands at 0-0. No, you did not miss any goals..

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Ghana v Germany game. Apologies for starting this late, but I can assure you that I have a very valid reason...
