Speculation surrounding Virender Sehwag’s impending retirement gained momentum on Monday following his presence at the launch of the Masters Champions T20 League in Dubai. Only retired cricketers are eligible to participate in the League.
A tweet by a foreign scribe from Dubai that “Sehwag appears to have announced his retirement from international cricket” caught the cricket circles here by surprise.
Sehwag, however, confirmed to The Hindu that he had not yet retired from any form of cricket.
Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) secretary Anirudh Chaudhary told The Hindu that “I can confirm to you that, as of now, he has not announced his retirement.” Sehwag is contracted by Haryana to play the current domestic season as a “mentor”, according to Chaudhary. “He will inform the HCA and BCCI whenever he decides to retire,” said Chaudhary, who is also the Board treasurer.
Sehwag had been contemplating his future association with the game and his move to Haryana from Delhi was driven by the need to help the young side.
In any case, the opener had reconciled to the fact that his return to international cricket was tough.
In his career, which began with a century on Test debut, against South Africa at Bloemfontein in 2001, Sehwag made 8586 runs in 103 matches with 23 centuries, including two triple hundreds.
