The auction will begin at 10 a.m IST. I guess a lot of us thought it would start at 9 a.m sharp. For all things Bengaluru, blame it on the traffic, even on a weekend morning.

Richard Madley, a familiar face at all IPL auctions, will take it away this time as well as the auctioneer.

Here's some more reading material for you before we get underway. There will be a lot of uncapped players called out. Some will be familiar names, some not so. There is an Under-19 World Cup going on and a few of those guys are in the list. Here's our take on select Indian uncapped players who could bag a contract by the end of the weekend. Read here.

Amol Karhadkar has this story for us on some familiar names like Deepak Hooda who could attract bids as high as that of the capped players. A capped player is one who has represented the country in international cricket.

Preview

The general auction of the Indian Premier League, ahead of the 2018 season, is underway in Bengaluru from 9 a.m (IST) onwards. A total of 578 players – including 360 Indian players - will be auctioned on January 27 and 28. Why are we talking of so many numbers here? Because the IPL has now gone back to its eight original teams, with Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals returning, and Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Super Giant making way for them.

Read our auction preview here .

Here’s the agenda – on Saturday, 170 players will be auctioned, starting with the 16 marquee players, in two sets of eight each. Then the other capped and uncapped players will come up for bidding. A capped played is one who has played international cricket. On Sunday, the remaining players ( 171-578 ) will be auctioned. The unsold players will come back into the auction once all 578 are called out.

Teams can retain a maximum of five players using the player retention and Right to Match options. A franchise can retain a maximum of three capped India players and two capped overseas players. What is the Right to Match option? Here’s an explainer.

Here are the players already retained by each team:

Delhi Daredevils : Rishabh Pant, Chris Morris, Shreyas Iyer

Mumbai Indians : Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah

Rajasthan Royals : Steven Smith

Royal Challengers Bangalore : Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan

Kolkata Knight Riders : Sunil Narine, Andre Russell

Kings XI Punjab : Axar Patel

Sunrisers Hyderabad : David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Note: A team can have a maximum of eight overseas players. The maximum squad size is 25.
