Electoral officer set to release draft roll

October 03, 2019 08:14 pm | Updated 08:15 pm IST - Mumbai

The cricketing fraternity with interest in BCCI’s administration and election will get a chance to mull over the probable line-up of the pioneering nine-member Apex Council that will replace, until recently the powerful, Working Committee once the electoral officer N. Goplaswami releases the Draft Electoral Roll at 5 p.m. on Friday.

While announcing the election schedule on September 26, Gopalaswami asked the 37 full members (Chandigarh is an associate member without voting rights) to submit applications to have their representatives for the general meeting / election to be held here on October 23.

Not only will the election be held for five office bearers (president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer) and one member representing the BCCI Full members, but also for two members to the IPL Governing Council.

Final electoral roll

After examination of objections, if any, the final electoral roll will be released on October 10. A clear picture of the candidates for eight positions will be known on October 16.

With CoA running BCCI’s affairs from January 2017, there is plenty of buzz around even among club level members of a large number of States about the BCCI, finally, taking charge of things.

The eligibility of a member association to take part in the AGM / Election will be decided by the CoA, based on the fact of the association being BCCI Constitution compliant or not. The BCCI Constitution, approved by the Supreme Court, was registered with the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies in August 2018.

CoA mandate

The CoA will also find out if the nominated representative is free of the disqualification rule to attend the AGM. The CoA believes it has the authority to decide on the eligibility aspect for the member association and its representative, but the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has asserted that the Supreme Court has not given such authority to the CoA. The electoral office has said that he will go by the CoA mandate.

The electoral officer has said that if he finds the representative ineligible, he would not allow a replacement.

The election of the Indian Cricketers Association and its State Chapters will be held from October 11 to 13 and the results will be declared on October 15. The ICA Board will nominate the male and female to the Apex Council of the BCCI on October 16, and also to State Apex Councils.

From the election aspect, news heard on the grapevine is that a big shot aligned to the BJP may become the BCCI president.
