At 26, Arul Vivasvan Suppiah is dreaming to become the first Malaysian to play for England in international cricket. For the record, he had already represented England in the age group categories.

After moving to England along with his parents to pursue studies, Suppiah, who was one of the most successful batsmen in County cricket this season with about 1,200 runs, is keen to write a new chapter for his country. “I also play hockey and badminton regularly,” he said in an exclusive chat with The Hindu.

His inspiration

Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar is his inspiration. “Right from childhood, when I saw him for the first time, I began chasing my dream to be a cricketer. I watched a lot of video tapes of his batting. He is a genius,” he said.

Suppiah is now playing for Somerset Sabres, which is in Hyderabad to compete in the Champions League, led by former Australian star Justin Langer.

“After the initial struggle which was something of a culture shock for me when I was first given a chance to play for Somerset at 19, I am now enjoying the experience,” says Suppiah, who also chips in with his left-arm spin.

Major influence

“Justin has been a major influence because of his work ethics, professionalism and the cricketing culture he rubs off onto his teammates, himself being one of the most successful batsmen in recent history,” the Malaysia-born cricketer said.

“Now I am aiming to play for England at the earliest. I hope to get the opportunity which should be a great honour,” says Suppiah.

“Cricket is picking up in Malaysia and I believe that lots of people are following my career. I would be pleased if it helps to make cricket grow in a big way back home,” he said.
