After the high of winning the 800m gold medal in the Asian Games, Manjit Singh has now turned his attention to the 2019 Doha Asian Athletics Championships.

Manjit, who is currently training at the SAI campus here, said, “My focus is on winning a medal at the Asian Championships, and then to qualify for the World Championships.”

But first, Manjit will have to qualify for the continental meet. “The top-two in the Nationals will earn Doha spots. Jinson Johnson, myself and a few others will be competing for the berths,” Manjit said, at the ‘Skechers Champions Workshop’ here on Saturday.

The gold at Jakarta has multiplied the expectations placed on the athlete. “Yes, people expect me to do well now. Life has changed after the Asian Games. Now that I have received love and well wishes from so any people, I’m even more motivated to well. To achieve this, I’ve doubled my training time.

We train at SAI here for a month, and then we continue our training in Ooty. The Asian Championship is a huge event, so I have to prove myself,” he said.

Asked if he has a timing target in mind, Manjit said, “If I do my best, I’ll get a medal. Sometimes, even a 1:50.0s timing is enough to win a medal. I’m not keen on timings for now, as I’m focused on training hard and staying injury-free.”
