Unavailability of top athletes has forced the Athletics Federation of India to cancel the Indian Grand Prix series, proposed to be held at Patiala later this month.
The AFI wanted to hold at least two legs of the Indian GP so that athletes could have more competitions ahead of the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow.
“The likes of discus throwers Krishna Poonia and Seema Antil and shot putter Om Prakash Karhana have left to train overseas. Also, coach Nikolai Snesarev does not want long and middle distance runners training under him to participate,” a top official of the association said.
This means that most of the athletes will have just the National inter-State championships at Lucknow from June 5 to 8 before the CWG. Selections for the CWG will be done during the meet.
