In remembrance

Given Remembrance Day was this past weekend (11/11 to be precise), naturally, the Internet had its own way of having a moment of silence — Reddit in particular.

One image that has gone viral once again is of nurses in their bomb trenches between hospital wards, taken in France in 1918. For many, the image inspires courage and sentiments of unity in times of incomparable fear. But what’s the Internet if some people don’t have some weird questions? One user asked on the thread, “I wonder where they got out again. Climbing in skirts like those is no joke,” while another asked, “What did they do when it rained?”

Within the same subject of the First World War, an audio recording allegedly of the exact moment gunfire ceased at the end of the War is circulating from a thread posted on r/damnthatsinteresting. While many were gullible around this obvious hoax, others took the time to point out that it was fake, with one user explaining, “This is a ‘recreation’ using sounds recorded from earlier in the war. It’s an imagining of what the end of the war might have sounded like. It’s not real, and the birds chirping was added.”

Speaking of Reddit, whenever I feel as though we are losing sight of ourselves, I make a trip to the r/HumansBeingBros subreddit — it just teems with goodness.

Pause for breath

Post-Deepavali, nothing’s been scarier than the rising pollution levels in our country, with the capital being an epicentre. While scrolling on LinkedIn and again on Reddit, a couple’s photoshoot conducted by photographer Ashish Pareek in Delhi raised some brows. Rather than being questionably full of affection and cheesiness, an image of the couple in front of the India Gate has them wearing breathing masks with one user on the post captioning it as, ‘Love Story 2020 Delhi version’. Funnily enough, this picture isn’t recent — it’s close to a year old — and it’s sad that users on the Reddit thread are saying it’s old rather than pointing out the pervading issue of the city’s health. The antithesis of romanticism and impending poor health strikes a chord here.
