National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will review the status of mental health care system in north-eastern states in a meeting with officials from the respective states in Guwahati this week.
During the meeting, the points of discussion will include “overall conditions in mental hospitals and status of implementation of district mental health programme,” NHRC said.
The meeting, which will be inaugurate by NHRC Member P. C. Sharma, will also discuss the status of the proposals of mental hospitals and district hospital which are pending with state governments for augmenting facilities and granting permission to carry out teaching courses in the region, it said.
“The states to be covered in this review meeting include Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Sikkim,” it added.
The directors of mental hospitals in the region, senior official dealing with mental health in the state, officials of health and family welfare ministry, ministry of social justice and empowerment, professors of psychiatry in the medical colleges of the region, respective State Human Rights Commissions and representatives of Medical Council of India will participate in the meeting.
