In January 2013, I filed a complaint in the District Consumer Court against my flat builder for not handing over the completed flat even after 9 months from the date of the agreed date of handover (31/03/2012).

I had mentioned a ₹5 lakh compensation as I thought it would be adjudicated within around 18 months. The complaint, which was dismissed by the District Forum for lack of evidence, in December 2015, was admitted by the State Consumer Court, in 2016, and was listed for further hearing in April 2018.

As over six years have gone by, can I file a request with the State Forum to increase the compensation from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh? Will the forum agree to such a request?

At present, the case is posted for submission of written statement from the appellant/complainant.

The pecuniary jurisdiction of consumer courts determines the forum in which the complaint has to be filed. Your complaint is before the State Commission as an appeal and the same has to be treated as the continuation of original proceeding. Please go by the advice of lawyer representing you in the matter.

My brother owns land and a building in Madipakkam for the past 30 years, free from encumbrances. He is paying all the taxes in his name. Recently, he verified the TSLR entries online and while all entries were correct in the ‘name’ column, his name was found to be Balakrishnan instead of Krishnan. How do we rectify this?

Your brother can make an application to the jurisdictional Tahsildar’s Office for correction of name in the patta by providing copies of the registered documents.
