The Manmohan era

This refers to the report, “ >My life and tenure are an open book: Manmohan ” (May 18). Many reports seem to be very uncharitable to Dr. Manmohan Singh. He was the hero who rescued India from its huge economic crisis in 1991. If India knows about foreign brands, one has to thank him for that. He opened up the Indian economy. If life has improved, one has to thank him for it. Today, armchair critics appear to be competing with one another to take pot shots at him. Unlike many politicians, he was never a man of violence. One only has deep respect for him.

Dr. Singh should have resigned in either 2011 or 2012 and called for fresh elections. That was the time the UPA allies had done maximum damage to the coalition. Course correction should have begun after this. If this had happened, the Congress would not have slumped to as worse a performance as now.

M.M. Singh,
