The cartoon — “Rags to riches to rags” — was very interesting (“Cartoonscape,” Sept. 12). It reminded me of the story of a headload worker at Kalakkad in Tirunelveli district who won Rs.1 lakh in a Tamil Nadu lottery back in the early 1960s. He soon adopted a lavish lifestyle with his new-found friends and finally ended up as a headload worker. The story was given wide publicity in a Tamil magazine, which had an interview with the man. Morally, it was not hard-earned wealth. The moral is that it should be inculcated in young minds at an early age that if society is in the grip of avarice, it will finally lead to grief and misery.
