Personal attacks

It is astonishing that some in the political class continue to make deeply insulting personal attacks against other political leaders (“ >Amit Shah cautions Giriraj ,” April 2). In this case, the new episode of bitterness expressed by some in the BJP over the Congress president and her “skin colour” is unpardonable. Mr. Modi must realise that his mandate is also for discipline, decorum, dignity and mutual respect, something some of his party members appear to lack.

The terrible remarks deserve to be condemned. What is worse, they have ended up offending Nigeria, a good friend of India. Though most in Mr. Modi’s cabinet are experienced and sensible, the presence of certain individuals diminishes the aura around the rest. These individuals do not seem to be contributing anything to Mr. Modi’s stated goal of development and good governance.
