N-plant incident

September 14, 2011 01:54 am | Updated 01:54 am IST

In a developing country like India, where there is a huge gap between power generation and demand, the need for sustainable generation is essential. We thought nuclear energy was the answer to this, but it is becoming increasingly clear that there have to be stringent safety measures (“Explosion at French nuclear reprocessing plant,” Sept. 13). India might now have to rethink its decision in this area. We need to learn from Germany's decision not to extend the life of its ageing reactors and to invest in other energy sources.
