Medal hunt

While Indians continue to garner medals at the Asian Games in Indonesia and win laurels for the country a week into the events, it would also be sobering to remember that India is still way down in the medals table. We have less than a fifth of the total medals that China has — the only country with a comparable population — and only a tenth of its gold medals. Even countries with smaller populations such as Japan, South Korea and Iran are ahead of us.

While winning isn’t everything, it is useful to remember that, as a nation, we are still a fair distance away from other Asian countries in sporting and athletic excellence.
