No relief

Citizens seemed assured when it was clear that India was going to purchase crude from Russia at a discount, thereby expecting fuel prices to come down. But to everybody’s shock, fuel prices have started rising immediately, especially after the Assembly elections.

The increase in fuel prices is triggering the inflation of all essential commodities. Governments should control inflation rather than accelerating it.

Political prospects

The entire country knows the style of functioning of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the manner in which he conducted his party’s election propaganda in the State recently. The slant towards hate speeches highlights the divisive politics he is engaged in. To think that he could emerge as a potential successor to the top leadership in the ruling party is unsettling for many in a secular, socialist and democratic India.

The next step

A strike by trade unions cannot be dismissed as it did have an effect. As the government of the day, in its second term, has stepped up its drive to centralise all powers in its hands, there is a general assault on the federal principle which affects the fiscal, economic and legislative spheres. The time is now ripe for building broad unity to take on anti-people policies.

S.K. Khosla,
