Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced a relief of Rs.300 crore for the victims of Assam violence. Deserving though it may be, he should identify the causes for the violence and take measures to punish the perpetrators. If efforts are not made to address the root cause, monetary relief will only amount to a waste of taxpayers’ money.
